“Fated to Love You” Episode 5 recap

Mi Young slowly slithers into Gun’s brain.

Side dish: All the talk about snails throughout this episode had me smacking my lips. How about some Spicy Korean Sea Snail Salad? Beyond Kimchee has a recipe accompanied by pretty photographs here.

Episode Recap

Kim Mi Young (Jang Na Ra) is warmly welcomed to her new home by her grandmother-in-law (Park Won Suk), because of the baby she is carrying. In contrast, her new husband, Lee Gun (Jang Hyuk) has turned cold and bitter about having to give up his love, Nam Se Ra (Wang Ji Won) for their marriage of duty.

Meanwhile, Gun’s stepmother and half-brother conspire against him over ice cream. Their latest scheme is to reveal that the pregnancy is a sham.

Knowing how many people depend on the success of her marriage, Mi Young hides how unhappy she is from everyone. Everyone except Father Daniel (Choi Jin Hyuk), who appears when she is most in need of a sympathetic ear. Though Mi Young is a virtual stranger, Daniel does not have the heart to admit that he is not actually a priest. Plus, he suspects that Mi Young might be his long lost sister.

In the final scene, Daniel has just walked Mi Young to her front door when Gun drives up and steps out of his car. The two men visibly size each other up as Mi Young smiles, oblivious to the super entertaining love triangle coming into focus.

Comments

Only 만: So in episode 5, we learn that Gun can be a jerk as well as crazy.

Junggugeo Kaenada 중국어 캐나다: Well, he needs to be redeemed of some failing, so it might as well be a mean, crazy streak.

: I guess it would have been too easy if they’d maintained an amicable, but entertaining relationship all the way through the series. Though, in all honesty, my only objection was that this episode wasn’t as funny as the others have been.

중국어 캐나다: The way they segued to Gun’s bitterness was cartoonish, but his feelings are understandable. So, it was not too much of a stretch to destroy whatever amicable relationship sped them to the altar. And, they did try to be funny in the scene where they turned a midnight snack into a horror show.

: True, that was entertaining. His reaction when he found her under the table was priceless.

중국어 캐나다: Also, I laughed at Gun miming a snail with his hand right before a business negotiation, then later, wondering in the midst of a board meeting if the snail (aka Mi Young) had eaten, sending his board members into a tizzy.

: That was hilarious. It took me a minute to figure out what he was doing with his fingers, but when I did, I laughed out loud. And Daniel reappeared which I enjoyed. Oh, and Jang Hyuk’s shirt came off! That was nice.

중국어 캐나다: See? There were so many good aspects about this episode. I was impressed with how nuanced Jang Hyuk and Jang Na Ra were with their characters. He is insane, and acting like an asshole, but he is feeling guilty about his mistreatment of Mi Young, no matter how much he thinks she deserves it. Mi Young is sacrificing her happiness for the sake of her hometown community, and her baby, but she admits that she had hoped that there would be a sincere effort on both their parts to make it work. Perhaps, she secretly hoped that genuine feelings would develop.

: It’s true. Even Gun’s asshole behaviour is somewhat understandable in the context of his love for Se Ra. I would have been disappointed if he’d managed to leap into this marriage so easily. But, that said, he’s being a spectacular asshole, especially given that her hopes for the marriage are obvious. I’m not implying she’s in love with him, but she clearly had some hopes for making a loving family for the baby.

중국어 캐나다: I am surprised at how much I do like Mi Young, because I don’t usually like the willing martyr. I enjoyed her creepy reaction to Gun finding her under the dining table with a bowl of kimchi fried rice. And, it was heartbreaking to watch her watch the personal video of Gun and Se Ra, and realize that she had no chance of winning Gun over, because her pregnancy had destroyed his happiness.

: Yes, she’s surprisingly likeable given that she’s not my favourite type of character. Maybe it’s because she doesn’t come off as being weak? Or insipid?

중국어 캐나다: True, she is not giving in to weeping and self-pity. Plus, when she confides in sympathetic, hot priest, Daniel, she is not melting into a puddle. That takes self-control, which I admire.

: Maybe his garish red hair is putting her off? Though, I guess if she can get over Gun’s hair, Daniel’s do isn’t much of a stretch.

중국어 캐나다: I actually like Gun’s hair, but that is possibly the worst hair I’ve seen on Choi Jin Hyuk since before his makeover.

: He still looks good, so I forgive him. Plus we could exchange tips on how to maintain maximum garishness in our red hair.

중국어 캐나다: Yes, you, Choi Jin Hyuk and his ex-wife in “Emergency Couple”. By the way, I would like to mention how much I enjoyed the puffing up of chests at the end of episode 5. Gun may tell Mi Young that they have no responsibility to each other, but place an attractive man in her vicinity, and Gun is quick to stake his claim on her. I am super excited at the triangle that has appeared.

: Yes. Insane Gun versus super-nice Daniel. At this point, I’m pretty sure which way I’d go. Though, I do enjoy Gun’s insanity.

중국어 캐나다: Of course, but good guys always finish last. At the risk of spoiling the ending for viewers, it looks like Daniel will have to comfort himself with his sister, and not Mi Young.

: I’m sure his garish red hair will be a comfort as well.
