It’s all fun and games till someone gets punched in the face. Regardless, let’s have a look at the best fights in K-dramas, because it’s Friday and violence is always entertaining.

Heard It Through the Grapevine

It’s not every show where the class struggle becomes an actual struggle, but “Heard It Through the Grapevine” made it happen. When the scion of a rich and powerful family, In Sang (Lee Joon) marries the poor Seo Bom (Go Ah Sung), trouble was brewing from the start. It took a formal meeting between their parents for the situation to erupt. When In Sang’s father, Jung Ho (Yoo Joon Sang) offers a comfortable life in the country to his new in-laws in order to get them out of the way, In Sang can no longer sit still, and jumps up to apologize for his parents. Enraged, Jung Ho throws his breakfast tray at the traitorous In Sang, then tries to jump over the railing of the nook where they’re sitting to get at him. He’s followed shortly by Bom’s father, Hyung Sik (Jang Hyun Sung), who is trying to protect In Sang. The house staff jump in to protect the two men from themselves and it descends into chaos. I can’t stop laughing as In Sang escapes unscathed. – Only 만

King of High School Savvy

Executive, Jin Woo (Lee Soo Hyuk), and high schooler masquerading as an executive, Min Suk (Seo In Guk) have already been needling each other in the car when they pick up secretary, Soo Young (Lee Ha Na). Min Suk tries to get Soo Young to sit in the back seat on the pretense of wanting to speak with Jin Woo, while Jin Woo directs her to sit in the front. In the end, Soo Young meets both their demands by sitting in the front driver seat and placing the men in the back seat where they can converse. Of course, neither man is satisfied, and they soon take their frustrations out on each other like bickering siblings. After accidentally touching hands, Min Suk and Jin Woo fight to wipe the cooties off onto each other, slapping and shoving. Rather than threatening to turn the car around, Soo Young just laughs. Sadly, Jin Woo and Min Suk fight for real in a later episode, but don’t worry; they make friends again, and even land in bed together. – Junggugeo Kaenada 중국어 캐나다

Hidden Identity

Full disclosure: until the day before we put up this post, this entry went to “Heartless City”. Unfortunately for Paksa, last night I watched the first episode of “Hidden Identity”. When the partner of loose cannon police detective Cha Gun Woo (Kim Bum) is murdered in broad daylight by a gangster, Gun Woo chases him down to get revenge. In a nightclub, Gun Woo approaches the gangster’s table, and waits until he’s noticed. When the gangster sends his underlings after him, Gun Woo mows his way through in a flurry of flying kicks, punches and broken glass. When the gangster realizes that Gun Woo is the last man standing, he runs for it, with a dazed and bleeding Gun Woo at his heels. It’s not even 20 minutes into the show when Gun Woo throws the gangster off the roof of the building and follows him down. Woah. – Only

Prosecutor Princess

Prosecutor Hye Ri is being brutalized by gangsters after being discovered working undercover when she sees fellow prosecutor, Se Joon running up behind the thugs. Se Joon superman punches one man while kicking the other aside. He then kicks them both into submission as Hye Ri watches in awe. By the time Se Joon reaches Hye Ri, she is speechless. I, too, am struck dumb, because I can’t believe that Korean prosecutors are expected to infiltrate gambling rings and fight bad guys MMA style. – Junggugeo Kaenada

Ex-Girlfriend Club

What to do when the woman you’ve been in love with for years works for a guy with an abrasive personality who’s in love with her? In the case of Bang Myeong Soo (Byun Yo Han), he can’t resist getting in the face of film director, Jo Geun (Do Sang Woo) every chance he gets. When he comes to the apartment of his sick girlfriend, Soo Jin (Song Ji Hyo), to bring her some oranges, he finds Jo Geun already there, with an elaborate basket of fruit. Of course, the minute they’re left alone together, they’re at each other’s throats. But, not wanting to alert Soo Jin’s sister and brother-in-law, they start to fight each other quietly. And, in fact, Soo Jin’s family is none the wiser, until they bring the ailing Soo Jin out, to find the two of them rolling around on the floor. Caught out in a ridiculous position, Myeong Soo and Jo Geun try to pass off their fighting as male bonding. To no one’s surprise, Soo Jin is not convinced. – Only

Heart to Heart

When chaebol psychiatrist, Yi Seok arrives home, enraged cop, Doo Soo is waiting for him. Yi Seok gets out of his car and promptly gets punched in the face. Doo Soo rains down punches and kicks, but Yi Seok counters with biting and frantic slapping. As Yi Seok chomps down on a screaming Doo Soo, the scene cuts suddenly to Doo Soo trying to reassure patrolling cops that everything is under control while Yi Seok moans on the ground. The cops trust Doo Soo and leave while Yi Seok protests from the ground, kicking the air in frustration. – Junggugeo Kaenada
