Markthalle Neun

Markthalle Neun is a weekly market in the trendy Berlin neighbourhood of Kreuzberg. We decided to visit during the very popular Street Food Thursday, which takes place 5-10pm. It is preferable to arrive earlier rather than later, because the food runs out. For instance, I never got a chance to try Brammibal’s Vegan Donuts, and they looked delicious.

Berlin Beef Balls offered meatballs in four flavours inspired by Berlin, Bologna, Bangalore, and Bangkok. They really did not differ sufficiently for me to have a preference, so they all went well with the beer that the vendor sold.

Kumpel & Keule offered a dry aged beef burger that was very tasty. The fresh vegetables and bun, parts of the burger that are frequently neglected, completed it.

We decided to avoid any stall featuring cuisine that could easily be found at home like Korean and Mexican. For this reason, the Nigerian soul food caught our eye. I am sorry to say that I cannot remember the vendor’s name. Her food lacked a professional polish, but it was definitely delicious.

We finished off the night with a traditional apple and whipped cream pie that was more exciting than it looked. It just goes to show that you should never judge a pie by its humble cover.

Street Food Thursday was beloved by locals and tourists alike, and it was the culinary highlight of my visit to Berlin.
