Having started the evening enjoying fantastic sake cocktails and the 25 cent jukebox at the Black Dice Cafe, we were starving by the time we hit the street in search of food.
Fortunately, we ended up at Luther’s Chicken, a fried chicken stand at the back of the Churchill, a bar in the Dundas West area. JK and I both ordered two pieces of fried chicken, but mixed up the sides to get collard greens, fries, cole slaw and corn. The star of the show was easily the chicken. Two pieces gets you one dark meat, and one white, but both were perfectly juicy with a crispy, flavourful buttermilk batter that inspired us to abandon all pretence at table manners. The sides were also great, as was the biscuit.
Tip: We went on a Friday night, around 10pm, just when the Churchill starts to fill up. If you like eating messy food in a busy bar playing loud music, then feel free to do the same. If you live nearby and want to get your fried chicken on in more relaxed surroundings, then order it for takeout and get a drink while you wait. We didn’t want to take the chance of letting our food go cold, so we stayed, and enjoyed the full immersion sensory experience.
Sadly, the full immersion sensory experience meant that the bar was too dark for photos. Sorry! (Photo taken from Notable’s review of Luther’s Chicken)
