Friday Feature: Shrimp chip showdown

How much variation can there be on the packaged shrimp cracker? Not much, but enough for me to form an opinion and rank them.

Only and I usually share food testing duties, but I decided to tackle this one on my own, one night, out to boredom. I made myself sick eating shrimp chips, so, you’re welcome.

4. Nongshim Tako Seafood Flavor Chips

The package says ‘seafood’, but if it wasn’t for the cartoon octopus on the package, I would be hard pressed to identify which seafood these chips are modeled after. Adding to the confusion is the shape of the chips, which resembles a fish. These puff chips have a dusting of spice that makes the chips taste unpleasantly artificial.

3. Nongshim Shrimp Crackers

3. The shrimp cracker of my childhood; shaped like a french fry, but crunchy and light. The shrimp flavour is actually quite subtle, and more of an aftertaste. Throughout my long acquaintance with these Shrimp Crackers, I have never understood their appeal. I still find them underwhelming.

2. Nongshim Shrimp Flavored Chips

Initially, I wondered where the shrimp flavour was in these puffy chips. Then, as they melted in my mouth, a soft shrimp flavour spread throughout. The best way I can describe it is that they are like a nice, shrimp blanket for your tongue.

1. Paldo Shrimp Snack

And finally, a product not made by Nongshim. Paldo’s Shrimp Snack is closest in shape and flavour to the Nongshim Shrimp Crackers. However, the cracker is crispier, and the shrimp flavour is significantly stronger, though not sharp. This is the shrimp cracker I always expected from the Nongshim Shrimp Cracker, but never got. My bias for strong flavours made this my instant favourite.

Readers: which shrimp chip is your favourite?
