Episode 8 of It’s Okay It’s Love

Jang Jae Yeol (Jo In Sung) spontaneously takes his new girlfriend, Ji Hae Soo (Gong Hyo Jin) on her dream trip to Okinawa, clearly hoping for a romantic getaway to christen their new relationship. The trip goes from bad to worse, as she refuses to stay in the posh resort he’d booked for them, and especially not in the same room. Instead, Hae Soo cheerfully drags Jae Yeol out into the rain, insisting they can find a cheaper hotel by asking the locals for advice.

She’s very self-satisfied in her efforts to save money, but when her plan ends with the two of them in front of an extremely crappy hotel, he finally expresses his annoyance. She impatiently responds that she loathes women who depend on men for money, and wonders why he’s not happier with her for trying to be frugal. His patience finally snaps, and he points out that she’s the one who’s been going on about money since they arrived, and hasn’t given a single thought to his feelings, or the fact that they’re on a trip together.

She’s taken aback, but doesn’t apologize. Instead, she abruptly says, “Let’s go” and stomps off. When he protests against returning to the airport, she yells over her shoulder that she’s going to look for another hotel. He laughs in surprise, and follows her.

As obnoxious as I found Hae Soo here (it’s the expectation of applause that was a bridge too far), this was the scene that cemented my enjoyment of “It’s Okay It’s Love”. Having a heroine who isn’t afraid to set the terms in her relationship with the male lead is pretty awesome, regardless of how many grand romantic gestures she ruins along the way. The fact that he’s willing to follow her lead is just icing on the cake.
