We count down the days to Christmas by unveiling 24 magical Kdrama moments. Next up, “Misaeng”.
Episode 13 of Misaeng
Working late one evening, newbie worker, Jang Baek Ki (Kang Ha Neul) gets a rare evening off from his team leader, who sends him to the sauna to unwind.
Having spent the day comparing his lack of progress at work with the flashier success of his colleagues, Baek Ki carries on bemoaning his luck in the sauna locker room. It is not until he has locked up all his clothing that Baek Ki sees his supervisor, Assistant Manager Kang (Oh Min Suk), also naked, a few lockers down.
Any thought of his workplace insecurities is driven from Baek Ki’s head, as he’s overtaken by the awkwardness of being in a sauna with his boss. The seemingly random advice from his colleague, Han Suk Yool (Byun Yo Han) echoes in Baek Ki’s head, as he cooks in the hot tub, unable to leave before Manager Kang does. The awkwardness follows Baek Ki into the showers where he can’t figure out which stall is the appropriate distance from Assistant Manager Kang.
To cap it all off, Baek Ki is prevented from pointing out that Assistant Manager Kang has soap on his back by Suk Yool’s earlier warnings about being caught staring at his naked body. But, unable to leave it alone, he pretends to accidentally spray Assistant Manager Kang with the shower to get the suds off.
It is not until they’re dressed again, and drying their hair that the atmosphere returns to something approaching normal. Finally, Baek Ki gets up the courage to ask Assistant Manager Kang out for a drink, and makes a connection with his formerly distant supervisor.
As a solution to Baek Ki’s inability to connect with his supervisor, I didn’t see this scene coming. But, boy, did I laugh my ass off (and, let’s be honest, appreciate the view).
I freely admit these last two shots are gratuitous. You’re welcome.
