The Suspect movie review

Gong Yoo takes over for Matt Damon in a Korean interpretation of the Bourne franchise.

Gong Yoo Suspect
There is still time for a shower before I shoot you.

Junggugeo Kaenada 중국어 캐나다: ★★.5
Only 만: ★★★

Side dish: Gong Yoo’s secret agent protagonist is on the run, and has no time for a sit down meal.  Similarly, we were running for the movie theatre to claim good seats for The Suspect, and needed an affordable dinner that we could easily hide in our purses.  Chinese buns from Lucullus Bakery were the answer. We had BBQ Pork, Curry Beef, Sausage, Luncheon Meat…all delicious.

Junggugeo Kaenada 중국어 캐나다: I got very happy when you told me that The Suspect would be screening at our local multiplex.

Only 만: I got happy when I saw it in the paper, accompanied by a photo of Gong Yoo.

중국어 캐나다: It shows that Korean entertainment is reaching Bollywood levels.

: And, it wasn’t an empty movie theatre by any stretch. It has played in Toronto for two weeks, so far.

중국어 캐나다: Sadly, the anticipation was better than the movie, which was in the standard Jason Bourne style.

: It was pretty much the Bourne movies franchised out to Korea. Gong Yoo even stole the haircut.

중국어 캐나다: Why don’t you give a quick synopsis?

: North Korean super agent defects to South Korea to track down the man that killed his family. Hilarity ensues. The plot’s standard revenge fare, but the action was pretty relentless. I think they stopped to breathe for a total of two minutes. Sadly, the fight scenes left something to be desired. They were shot way too close, thus wasting what was probably a ridiculous amount of training. They could have been waving their arms in the air for all I could see.

중국어 캐나다: I got confused with the counter-intelligence stuff, but I figured it didn’t matter, because Gong Yoo would know who to punch. I found myself thinking, that’s Choi Han Gyul! Obviously, I wasn’t immersed in the movie enough. I was just happy that Gong Yoo is experiencing a low level of international success.

: It’s true. I’m more excited about the phenomenon of this movie reaching Toronto than the movie itself, which was basically Bourne in Korea.

중국어 캐나다: I can’t muster enough enthusiasm about this.

: Muster some negativity. What about the topless rock climbing scene?

중국어 캐나다: That was too short. It was about the same as what was shown in the trailer.

: What about the loose cannon sergeant (Park Hee Soon) chasing Gong Yoo? And, the gum-chewing guy (Jo Jae Yun)? He took a lot of abuse in this movie.

중국어 캐나다: I liked the loose cannon sergeant. Like Kim Woo Bin, he got sexier with time. The gum-chewing guy was pretty amazing, too. What have we learned?

: The Suspect lifted the template straight from the Bourne movies, but succeeded in creating an okay action flick. Not high art, but we got to watch Gong Yoo being intense for an hour and a half, and that’s nothing to sneeze at.
