Pizzeria Via Mercanti

What started out as a quest for a light lunch in Kensington Market ended up with a fantastic meal of Neapolitan pizza at Pizzeria Via Mercanti.

Despite not being that hungry, I ordered the Pizza Napoletana, with anchovies, black olives, capers and cherry tomatoes on tomato sauce. If you don’t like anchovies on pizza, then the Pizza Napoletana is not for you, especially since it has no cheese to soften the salty blow. For me, it was absolutely perfect, with an excellent crust and the requisite soupy middle.

My dining companion also ordered a pizza, opting for the Margherita with added prosciutto. We were both full before we finished but soldiered on regardless, because it was so tasty.

My other dining companion opted for the porchetta panini. The panini bread is made on the spot in the pizza oven, and the porchetta was flavourful and moist. I had a bite of it, and I would happily return to eat a whole sandwich.

In all, a tasty meal with friendly service. My only surprise was that the pizza came pre-cut, but it did make it easier to eat with my hands.
