Join us as we count down the days to Christmas by unveiling 24 magical Kdrama moments. Day 2 is “Greatest Love”!
Episode 9 of Greatest Love
Having made the discovery that he may have mistaken a racing heartbeat for love, loony actor Dokko Jin (Cha Seung Won) spends the episode gloating about getting over outcast idol, Gu Ae Jung (Gong Hyo Jin). He cheerfully drops off Ae Jung at a shoot for “Couple Making”, a show that has matched her with another man, and is about to send her off, when she confesses that she liked him, too.
Shaken, he checks his wrist heart rate monitor, and finds that his pulse is the same. He refuses to believe he could be so unmoved, asks to test one last time, then kisses her. Ae Jung is shocked, but Jin is even more shocked to find his pulse is still steady. As she walks away, he finally takes off his heart monitor, and counts his heartbeats manually.
When he realizes his heart is actually racing, he goes after her, but arrives too late to stop her from giving her hand to the other man. In pain, he clutches his heart as he watches the celebration from afar.
One of my favourite things about “Greatest Love” is that neither the Hong sisters, nor Cha Seung Won ever shied away from the ridiculous. While this scene has the air of star-crossed lovers missing their fated chance, in fact, the whole problem is based on Dokko Jin’s idiotic belief in a heart monitor over his own feelings. It’s so ridiculous that you’re not sure whether to laugh or cry or throw something at your screen, and yet, you don’t doubt the sincerity of their feelings (even if he does). Well done, Hong sisters!

I loved everything about Best Love but Ding Dong remains my most favourite thing/character. He is the CUTEST…and his bromance with Dokojin is ADORABLE.

Ding Dong was pretty awesome. Was I mistaken or did he pop up in You’re All Surrounded?

Oh yes….he was there as LSG’s childhood friend….I was so happy to see him…*sigh* there were only 1 or 2 scenes 😦

This is definitely one of my favorites. I agree that the heart monitor is so over-the-top ridiculous but it’s such an ingenious visual device to make that story work.

I can’t imagine it working in any other context, but in this one, yes, it was perfect. Over-the-top Dokko Jin made everything around him seem possible 😀
