After spending an hour on a streetcar to arrive at Kyouka Ramen, I was starving. I was also curious as to why they’d chosen the Beaches neighbourhood for their location, since it’s not much of a culinary destination. Or, more accurately, I was cursing them up and down for being in the middle of nowhere.
It turned out the trip was 100% worth it. We started out with the Karaage Chicken Wings and the Slow-Cooked Beef Tendon Donburi, and both were delicious. In fact, if we weren’t intending to follow up with ramen, we would have ordered more of the beef tendon. The soft, melting texture combined with the beefy flavour had us fighting over the appetizer-sized bowl.

On the other hand, since eating ramen was our purpose, ordering the beef tendon donburi may have been a mistake, because Kyouka Ramen produces a seriously hearty bowl. Both Denise and I opted for the Kyouka Ramen, which featured a mountain of toppings, including both pork and chicken chashu, but also a broth that was so rich that there was fat floating in it. I’m usually the type to finish my bowl of ramen (don’t judge), but I left some of the broth behind, not because it wasn’t delicious, but because I was so full. If this doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, the Shio ramen is listed as having a chicken and clam broth. I’ll try it the next time I can work up the courage for the epic streetcar ride, and let you know how it goes.
