Strong Woman Do Bong Soon episode 2

Side dish: Given what appears to be Min Hyuk’s lack of cooking skills, I’m going to assume they’re going to have ramen for breakfast, too. Here’s an idea for bacon and egg ramen from How Sweet It Is.

On her first day on the job as a bodyguard, supernaturally strong Do Bong Soon (Park Bo Young) follows game company CEO, Ahn Min Hyuk (Park Hyung Sik) shopping which, along with some online gossip, leads her to the assumption that he’s gay. Meanwhile, another attack happens in Dobong-dong, but this time the victim survives. Later, the victim is kidnapped from the hospital under the watch of straight-laced policeman, In Gook Doo (Ji Soo). Bong Soon is the only witness to the kidnapping, and ends up with a police escort who follows her around as she follows Min Hyuk around. When her police escort is stabbed, Min Hyuk invites her to stay at his house for her protection, only to have Gook Doo burst in, in an effort to protect her chastity.

Episode Review

JK is away this week, so we’ve drafted in occasional Noona, Jin Joo (진주) to step in. JK will be back next week.

Only 만: There was a lot going on in this episode, what with the assumptions about Min Hyuk’s sexuality thanks to his shopping habit, the insane kidnapper, and the final face-off between Gook Doo and Min Hyuk.

Jin Joo 진주: Let’s not forget how strangely unhelpful Bong Soon became when actual trouble came around.

Only: I did wonder about that. Even she pointed out that she couldn’t do anything for the victim of the kidnapping with her strength, but frankly, she wasn’t that good at protecting Min Hyuk either. However much Min Hyuk is impressed by her strength, it did kind of seem like he just wanted her around for the company. Which is cute, but kind of misses the point of the show.

Jin Joo: The two of them together was the best part of this episode, though. I was laughing pretty hard when they were bickering in the car about her staying at his place, and then as they ate the ramen. Despite the fact that he’s her boss, they do come off as equals.

Only: I love the two of them together. They’re so cute, but I may be projecting past disappointments on to this show a little bit. I was looking forward to a drama where the female character was at least as competent as the male character. Instead, we already have Bong Soon’s epic strength feeling like a superfluous detail in the second episode already.

Jin Joo: Maybe in future episodes, the two of them will learn how to make the best of their strengths together.

Only: Fair enough. I’m being very impatient, given that it’s only the second episode. I just hope they didn’t cast her as a superhero in one episode only to lose all that in the next.

Jin Joo: Actually, I was thinking that Min Hyuk’s insistence on solving the crimes without the police was his attempt at being a superhero, too. Now that he has the super-strong Bong Soon at his side, it’s as if he’s part of the Avengers. There’s even a super-villain in the form of the kidnapper.

Only: I guess that would make her the Hulk, then?

Jin Joo: And he’s Tony Stark. Though I guess instead of getting an Iron Man costume, he gets a stupid hoverboard.

Only: Though, on this show, he’d be gay Tony Stark.

Jin Joo: I’ll wait and see how they deal with the general assumption that Min Hyuk is gay. So far, I’m at least pleased with the fact that Min Hyuk wasn’t offended and made no effort to refute it when Bong Soon mentioned it. Though, the assumption that he must be gay because he’s handsome and likes shopping is pretty weak.

Only: Anyway, we already know Min Hyuk is not, because he’s the lead in the show and this is a Korean drama. We’ll just have to wait and see how they handle it.

What about Gook Doo? Has he improved on you at all this episode?

Jin Joo: He seems like a nice person, but his utter lack of interest in Bong Soon was frustrating. Gook Doo only seemed to care about her when he thought she was in danger, which makes you wonder if they’re even friends. He doesn’t seem to know her at all.

Only: Plus he didn’t show up in makeup and a dress this episode, so nuts to him. Anyway, I think Gook Doo bursting in to Min Hyuk’s house at the end in a rage is thanks to Min Hyuk’s advice to Bong Soon to make him jealous. I have the feeling we’re going to see it backfire in the next episode.

Jin Joo: Probably. I don’t mind as long as Min Hyuk and Bong Soon keep bickering. Hey, who knows? Maybe Gook Doo will join in in episode 3.
